Roaming the sales floors of Dallas’ high-end boutiques, they know where to find the best and how to style it just so.
Katie Bivins, Grange Hall
Why you need to know her: She’s the gatekeeper to some of the most unique brands in Dallas. Bivins has two of the coolest places in town—V.O.D. and Grange Hall—on her résumé. But her journey to shopgirl took an unusual path. The Amarillo native dabbled in marketing and political campaigning before settling in at Grange Hall. She’s inspired by the artistry inside the shop and calls the creativity “palpable.” Bivins strives for that in her personal life, too, spending free time at music festivals and art shows. Even the jewelry lines have to have stories behind them. She counts Noor Fares and Fernando Jorge as her favorites. Favorite designers: R13, Walter Steiger shoes, Rick Owens. Daily uniform: Anything gray and armloads of bracelets.
Bivins wears: Fernando Jorge 18k gold, white, and brown diamonds and imperial topaz Electric Shock ring, $14,036, Fernando Jorge 18k gold, white, and brown diamonds and imperial topaz Electric Crown ring, $5,170, Fernando Jorge 18k gold, white, and brown diamonds and imperial topaz Electric Waves ring, $3,960, all Grange Hall; vintage fur, Bivins’ own
Diamond Mahone, TenOverSix
Why you need to know her: She’ll teach you how to mix things up. Mahone has been playing in luxe retail since she was a child. Her mom owned a lingerie boutique, and her first job was wrapping gifts at Saks Fifth Avenue during the holidays. She’s got an eye for new design, but her wardrobe is packed with thrift and vintage finds (she counts a vintage Neiman Marcus silk bomber jacket covered in gold stars as one of her favorites). Pairing pieces is where the magic happens. Peruse her personal blog, diamondjanae.com, and watch as she seamlessly works a thrift-shopped crop top with Loeffler Randall heels. Oh, and the man behind the lens? That’s her boyfriend, Leon Williams, NFL football player and photographer. Favorite designers: SUNO, Dries Van Noten, Anndra Neen accessories. Daily uniform: Something with a print and her signature short ’do.
Mahone wears: Patrik Ervell college bomber jacket, $627, Maison Kitsuné sweatshirt, $299, both TenOverSix; patent faux leather circle skirt, $49.95, H&M NorthPark
Havilah Bender, Traffic LA
Why you need to know her: She’ll help you up your edge. Fashion was an accidental career path for Bender. Formlerly a makeup artist, her first taste of high-end retail came at Barneys, where she worked for two and a half years until they closed their doors. Immediately after, she helped open Traffic LA, the Los Angeles transplant boutique that pushes Dallas’ boundaries with avant-garde offerings from designers such as Ann Demeulemeester and Rick Owens. And that’s perfect for Bender, who has a sophisticated, rock-and-roll aesthetic topped with a constant, color-changing mane. Think of a shade, she’s had it—from blue to purple, green to gray. Fashion, to her, is an art form. And on the side, she dabbles in others: acting, modeling, singing, and good old-fashioned swing dancing. She’s also a mom of two. Favorite designers: Rick Owens, Kenzo, D.Gnak by Kang.D. Daily uniform: All black, winged eyeliner, and boots.
Bender wears: Comme des Garçons Play red heart logo white shirt, $258, Traffic LA; leather harness suspenders, leather leggings, Bender’s own
